The Artist

me

Jack Berkery, retired Software Engineer, writer and artist.

I'm also a lifelong runner and known in that community as the Sumo Runner.

I've done quite a bit of writing too, but won't go into that here. I had close to 50 technical publications in my career and wrote perhaps as many as 75 articles about running. I lost count years ago.

ill titleAbout me and my art.

I'm a retired Software Engineer who found he had too much time on his hands after exiting the workforce, so I began painting and drawing again in 2011. I say again because this was not the first foray into the arts. I had painted quite a bit in 1974 & 75 at which time I was among the founding members of the Colonie Art League.

This is my one-man show in June 2012 at the Town of Niskayuna Senior Center. After only a year and a half of new art output, I was invited to show my work and make a presentation at a local town center. It included works in graphite pencil, colored pencil, watercolors and oils.

This is a photo of me at the first art show that the Colonie Art League had in June of 1975. It was at Washington Park in Troy, NY. I sold the one by my elbow and the one on the left is still hanging in my house.

Unfortunately, when we started having a family, I simply stopped. Toddlers and oil paints are not compatible, besides my art room became a nursery. I did come back to painting for a short time in 1991 when I was awaiting and then recovering from open heart surgery, but then stopped again when I was fully recovered. It was another 20 years before I took it up anew. I found though, that within a few short weeks, I was doing as well as ever and actually improving rapidly.

When I started taking art lessons this time, I told the instructor that I needed to draw draw draw. The painting would be secondary until I was happy with what I could do with a no. 2 pencil. You can see the results on my drawings gallery page.

And this was my entry (the roses) into the art show at the Colonie Town Hall in June 2011, 36 years after the last one I entered.
